About me

Gemma Bug

Working with textiles has been a life long passion of mine stemming from the creative environment I grew up in. My grandparents knitted and crocheted, and as a skilled seamstress, my mother made many of her own clothes. I would often watch as she worked at the sewing machine and I learnt to sew at a young age.

I studied art at Camberwell College of Arts in London, and whilst living in Brighton I studied surface and textile design.

Whilst pregnant with my first child I was inspired to make a special blanket for his arrival. I so enjoyed the process that I made more of them for friends when they had babies, which then led to the commissions.

I create soft and cosy blankets in a range of striking colours and patterns. My work is bright, colourful and joyous. I've found that there is often a very muted colour scheme with textiles made for babies, which by my nature I tend to avoid in my own work, preferring to work with bold contrasts and eye catching patterns.

Predominantly in fleece, cotton, satin, and soft acrylic yarn, the blankets I design and handcraft are unique. I love to experiment with both contrasting and complimentary colours, and highly patterned prints whilst making these one off pieces, which are designed to be warm and soft against the skin.

A busy mum of two small children, I understand the demands of parenthood and I endeavour to make all of my blankets robust yet soft, machine washable and suitable for tumble drying.

If you're interested in one of my blankets but can't quite find exactly what you want, or perhaps you have some fabric which is sentimental to you that you'd like incorporated into a piece, I'd be happy to work with you to create something bespoke just for you.
